Learn About The Importance Of Tomatoes

It’s just so difficult to believe that the tomatoes, probably the most popular vegetable nowadays, was once considered deadly and poisonous. They’re available all year-round in fresh and sometimes preserved forms. Because of this, there’s no shortage of uses for this very versatile “vegetable.”

The English word “tomato” came from the Spanish word, “tomatl”, that first appeared in print during 1595. Europeans, who were suspicious on the fruit’s bright, shiny appearance, mistakenly thought tomatoes as poisonous.

Although it’s been said that it’s leaves are indeed poisonous. The native versions are small, that is similar with the cherry tomatoes, and are most likely yellow in color than the usual red.

When people learned that this plant is actually edible, they started to plant and eat it. There are so many ways of eating it, both hot and cold, and they’re grown on both coasts in United States all year round. Try to go to your local grocery store or even in any garden, and you will definitely find many kinds of tomatoes there.

Although they’re being classified as “vegetable”, many considered tomatoes a “fruit”, too. The reason why they’re classified as vegetables is to avoid any confusion with other countries that doesn’t have import duties. But actually, tomatoes should be categorized as “fruits”.

This fruit may be used in so many different ways. Many add it on a sandwich or even eat the tomatoes as a sandwich, itself! You better try preparing a tomato sandwich. All you need is sandwich bread, some mayonnaise and a tomato, then voila! You’ll already have a delicious sandwich for lunch!

Tomatoes too are widely known as the most important ingredient for most salads. I’m pretty sure most people haven’t tried any salads yet without any tomatoes on it. There are some who dice them, others prefer to slice them, and most prefer their tomatoes sliced a quarter for their salads. Cherry tomatoes also work well on salads.

Italian dishes use a lot of tomatoes, too. Just cook the tomatoes down and you’ll be able to make a great tomato base for spaghetti sauce, marinara sauce and sauce for lasagna.

Remember to keep your tomatoes from going bad. Do not store them inside a refrigerator. Just place it on a paper bag or on the counter top and they will just ripen naturally on its own.

If you place them inside a refrigerator, then they won’t ripen well and the taste won’t be as good. If you have time, jar the tomatoes to make the perfect spaghetti sauce. Just think about how that will taste after several months of being stored on a jar! The longer they’re stored, the more it actually becomes so tasty.
